FTC To Require Full Disclosure On Blog Posts

One of the most effective advertising methods in the world is having someone people trust tell them good things about a product. That’s why Leo Laporte gets paid to talk about how awesome Audible is on his shows. And those ads are effective. Even though people know that they’re advertisements, having Leo Laporte tell you that something is awesome makes you think that it must be the case. Apparently so many bloggers were abusing this principle that the Federal Trade Commission is stepping in to do some policework. Bloggers who get paid to write posts, for example, will now have to say that they aren’t just speaking about something out of their own volition. This will also apply to tech reviewers, most of which already disclose that they are given review units, but also to a handful who may be getting some toys to keep. This is kind of awesome news for bloggers because it means that we are being taken seriously as a source of news. This FTC move recognizes both the legitimacy and popularity of content on websites. So all you net journalists out there, give yourselves some well-earned pats on the back.
